Full Biography:  

Michael received a B.S. degree with Academic Honors from Columbia University in 1989 and a B.S. degree from Allegheny College in 1989 by participating in the 3/2 Combined Plan Program.  Michael also received a J.D. from Seton Hall Law School in 1998.  While at Seton Hall Law School, Michael was a law clerk with Dilworth & Barrese, LLP from 1995-1998.  Following graduation from Seton Hall Law School, Michael was associated with Dilworth & Barrese, LLP from 1998-2005.  He then founded his successful practice of M. Carmen & Associates on August 1, 2005, which operated continuously through November, 2016.  Michael is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and is a member of a number of associations, including the New York Intellectual Property Law Association (NYIPLA), American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), Intellectual Property Owners Association and International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property.  He is also on the Patent Committee of the NYIPLA, and on the Chemical Patent and Diversity Committees of the AIPLA.  Michael’s practice is focused primarily in all phases of managing domestic and foreign chemical patent portfolios; trademark prosecution and related matters; conducting freedom to operate, validity and patentability searches; and rendering written opinions.  Michael has developed and managed patent portfolios for startups as well as large corporations.  Michael’s fields of technology include pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, small and large molecules, lubricant additives and compositions, fuel additives and compositions, petroleum processing, polymer chemistry, contact lenses, catalysts, specialty chemicals, organosilicon chemistry, fragrances and compositions, cosmetics, medical and mechanical devices and semiconductors.
